PROJECT

A Bridge Between Emotinal Learning and Technology

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) supported by technology is an innovative challenge in the area ofeducation. Children who become skilled at SEL improve their relationships with others and academic success.

The efficiency of the SEL process in emotional outcomes increase when it take place with young children in early childhood classrooms. SEL is also an effective way to reach young children and youth who are most vulnerable (e.g., problem behavior). Education technology is as a tool that can enlarge learning when used adequately by educators and teachers.
In this project, the partners acting at pre-school, school and higher education level, aim to link research, best practice and innovative learning strategies (play-based learning, peer learning, collaborative learning, and partner learning) with education technology and used technological resources (internet, multi-media), in order to:

i) Create a platform to support both children and teachers, and other users, to implement the social and emotional learning program, where all outputs produced by the project will be available, and a backoffice where data from all users will be recorded;
ii) Based on a Research report, adapt an “Emotional Competencies” methodology. Training will be provided to teachers and other professionals (e.g., psychologists, school mediators);
iii) Develop a cross-national training course for teachers to support the use of the platform and to implement the methodology. A manual for the applicators (e.g., teachers, psychologists) will be launched;

iv) Elaborate an evaluation protocol, with a qualitative research methodology – focus group – with children, complemented by a quantitative methodology – measurement instruments (e.g., self-report questionnaires);

v) Create a tool “Emotechie Serious Play” to develop and promote social and emotional learning in students from 5 to 14 years old. A manual for children will also be released. A randomized control trial to evaluate the tool will be performed.

The participants from Portugal, Hungary, Greece and Spain are:

1) students in public and private schools, range from 5 to 14 years old, who will be involved in the implementation of the “Emotional Competencies” methodology in classrooms, and will use the digital platform with the tool “Emotechie Serious Play”;

2) educators/teachers/other professionals who will receive training and implementing the methodology, using the manual and the digital platform.

3) stakeholders, who will be involved in all process of developing the outputs, and will have available materials related to SEL through technology.

The concrete results will be the following:

1) Research on the involved countries highlighting the following:

a) the existing research or lack of it on SEL and technologies;

b) the best practices cross-nationally among the partner countries.

2) A Report with the outcome of the research, per country and for the whole consortium.

3) Produce a training material including information regarding:

a) social and emotional skills;

b) benefits of SEL and technology.

c) SEL measurements and intervention programs

4) The development of a digital platform including:

a) teacher handbook;

b) children handbook;

c) multimedia games.

5) Carry out the intervention program in some of the partners involved in the project, implementing the tool produced.

6) Promote and disseminate the use of SEL and technology in children, in order to raise awareness of it.

The impact of the BEEmotinal-Techie project will be:

– at local level, in participants (students, teachers and schools), and in other schools/organizations, by improving their social and emotional skills, using SEL and technology.
– at regional and national level, a change the policy or increase the awareness of decision makers, regarding the implementation of SEL programs in the curriculum and regular classes. With the dissemination of the project, several stakeholders will be involved, encouraging them to use and implement the materials developed.
– at European/international level, the dissemination of the project, will contribute to overcome some barriers about how technology improve learning and share of a good practice and technological tools to spread the use of SEL.

The BEEmotinal-Techie project will work toward to address and increase the implementation of education technology for SEL, across nations.

This project also aims to pave the way for the development of technologies to be made available as a service of education in the area of emotions in various age groups, in order to improve the performance and citizenship of young people in these age groups. On the other hand, the continuity of this project aims to promote the creation of startups that may be interested in commercializing these technologies (already proved their value through their use and feedback in practical context) outside Europe and the development of new functionalities.
